Every year more than two hundred and fifty thousand Sri Lankans go abroad for foreign jobs and there are around 1.7 million Sri Lankan citizens living in countries across the world.  Remittances from migrant workers, estimated at around $4.1 billion in 2010, is the most important source of foreign exchange surpassing earnings from apparel exports. Hiru FM and Sooriyan FM do yeoman service to this community keeping them close to their home in spirit although geographically distanced. Hiru FM and Sooriyan FM while operating successful radio stations locally have reached out to Sri Lankan across the world by Net Casting their channels.  The many interactive features it has make it attractive to listeners, both young and old. The latest addition to Hiru FM is a Gossip page which takes an impartial look into the latest stories on celebrities and prominent personalities. Migrant workers use this channel to dedicate songs to their loved ones in Sri Lanka, sending messages, poems, joining in live chat with DJs and getting live information about the happenings ‘ back home’.  Owing to the low band width required access via smart phones is facilitated. Currently hirufm.lk is ranked by Alexa (the global website ranking company) as 67th most visited site in Sri Lanka and the 48,125th in the world among 30 million web sites.

 

Yalu Chat

Yalu is an anonymous chat service currently available for the Etisalat Customer base. It is a fun application which operates on simple sms technology. It allows a person to find ‘a friend’ or ‘a yaluwa’ in time of need. There are times when people have emotions that need to be expressed without fear of repercussion. At times where there is no one to talk to Yalu can be your savior. The fact that you can remain anonymous helps a person feel at ease.  Yalu was introduced to the market with a revenue model. Etsalat customers who download the application from the Etsalat App Zone pay a monthly fee of Rs. 30/= of which 30% goes to Etisalat and the balance to “Yalu”.

 

Jurors’ Evaluation

Jurors view was this is a very interactive tool for sharing knowledge and expressing ideas. An attractive feature of Yalu Chat is the manner in which the system gives you a ‘nudge’ if you do not respond for a while with a ‘why are you silent’! If there is no response for a while the system will offer to connect you with another friend. Another useful feature is that the commands are very simple and the user does not have to commit any of it to memory.  Yalu Chat has introduced games and mini apps to relive the monotony and keep user interest alive     

The project has been launched with a good revenue model. Six months since deployment and Yalu Chat is serving an active community of over 10,000. Although currently limited to one mobile service provider the developer has plans to reach other network providers. Skype and Google Talk based solutions are also to be released in the future.

 

Velenda

Velenda, or the Merchant,  is a game , in which the player has to test his/her skills in managing a small boutique, attending to his many clients, ensuring the shop is well stocked and secure from thefts. The player has to sell his wares to the villagers and reconstruct the shop. Game also contains an engaging storyline to captivate the player.

Jurors’ Evaluation

There's no doubt that there has been astounding developments in online gaming world wide although Sri Lanka has been somewhat laid back in this particular domain of development. However gaming is enjoyed by Sri Lankans of all ages.  Velenda has a unique theme and an interesting story line. It does not borrow from the fast paced games which are found in abundance. It also projects the rural culture of our country   through the village boutique around which the game and the story revolve.

At the start of the game the experienced shopkeeper has retired and a new, inexperienced one (the player) has stepped in. Customers call over for a cup of tea or to buy groceries. Grocery items such as flour or sugar have to be weighed as per the quantity asked for and wrapped in newspaper before being handed over to the customer. Initially customers are few but as the game picks up customers call over in quick succession and the shop keeper is hard pressed to satisfy them all. He has to work hard to make sure his customers don’t go off in a huff! The goal is to ensure he earns enough to keep his shop going and to buy upgrades. The jury found it to be a refreshing and interesting game which has a distinct Sri Lankan flavor to it.
