iHelmet 

Product Description

iHelmet is a product designed to empower, provide security and protection for motorcycle riders. It uses an array of advance sensors and a specially developed app running on an Android Smartphone that communicates with the iHelmet via Bluetooth technology.

The user is able to obtain many useful sensor-based alerts, improving safety and convenience when he is on the road. A key-fob remote allows the user to control many features, without taking the Smartphone out of his pocket.

Jurors’ Evaluation 

iHelmet, initially produced for the military, makes life safer for motorcycle riders. It uses GPS coordinates to generate safety features like speed alerts and distance alerts monitoring the distance from vehicles behind the rider. It also has a SOS feature which sends automated SMS messages to three predefined numbers at the time of an accident and also records sensor readings to provide information related to the accident for future reference.

Other features include an air quality sensor which can also provide a rider who has had liquor with alcohol level information, additional lighting to improve visibility and other light controls and an emergency phone charger. The producer states that in 2013 after his product was developed, a more expensive US product with fewer features has been marketed. The development of iHelmet as a device with an impressive range of safety features and added services for the motorcycle rider is an accomplishment worth recognition.

"SIYARA" HARBOUR VTMS 

Product Description

“Siyara” is a vessel traffic monitoring and management solution for commercial ports and harbours. It consists of a full scale 3-Dimensional (3D) view of the entire harbor environment and the conventional 2-dimensional (2D) traffic monitoring view. The 3D view enhances the user’s awareness of a situation and an operator can select viewpoints and perspectives within the 360o panorama scene where moving or static objects can be viewed. It supports the planning of port operations, addresses safety issues such as environmental impact of shipping accidents and security issues that can lead to improved efficiency and reduction of human errors.

Jurors’ Evaluation 

Presently, Siyara is being used to monitor traffic in the Colombo South Harbour and its use is due to be further expanded. It helps plan port operations including berthing allocations and pilot and harbour tug services, predictions on tides and currents, and addresses safety and security issues supported by alarm functions. The mobile application, which enables distance management, is a unique feature of Siyara and two types of mobile applications are included instead of 3D and 2D view applications. One type is the mobile version of 2D view. The mobile application helps identify non-AIS emitting objects such as harbour pilot boats, tugboats and cranes. Such efficient monitoring is vital for a safe harbour environment.. Although two similar systems are available internationally, Siyara is much cheaper and customised for use in the local environment. Siyara personifies the indigenous development of sophisticated real time management systems for a complex operation.

Kadira

Product Description

Kadira is a Performance Monitoring Service for the MeteorJS Web Framework. This app helps developers who use Meteor Realtime Web Framework to identify and fix performance issues. When this small package is installed into the developer’s app, it can show exactly what is happening behind the scenes, reveal bottlenecks and help developers to fix them quickly. Kadira also comes with a modern error tracking system so that developers do not need to scan through server logs to find errors.

Jurors’ Evaluation 

Kadira is a performance monitoring service provided exclusively to developers working with Meteor Web Framework. Although this restricts its usage, the work of this Sri Lankan producer has been recognized by Meteor and his products have been recommended by Meteor for use by developers. The Kadira package provides extensive monitoring of the developer’s work, indicating errors and bottlenecks through an interface displaying a wide range of real-time data. This specifies to developers through plots and data on a user friendly dashboard, the parts of their programs which are responsible for long wait times and helps them to optimize their work real-time. The error tracking system also provides a convenient method of listing errors that simplifies the work of the developer. All in all, Kadira is a creditable effort by a Sri Lankan producer that has made an impact on a specialized area of the world stage.  The Jurors felt this deserved due recognition.

Mobitel iCard

Product Description

Mobitel iCard is a comprehensive solution that can be used for attendance management, payment solutions and library functions in schools and colleges. It provides a robust, secure and automated attendance management system for both students and staff. In addition the iCard use can be extended to control access to various school facilities.

Jurors’ Evaluation 

The Mobitel iCard shifts attendance and facilities management in schools to a digital platform. The attendance monitoring component has been deployed in a few schools contributing to improved school attendance. The card use can be expanded to the other areas like the library, but this would require the improvement of existing e-systems in schools. The card also provides students with a school photo ID.

The iCard attendance monitoring device generates a SMS that can be sent to parents or guardians who register their mobile phone number with the system and this includes parents who use phones from other service providers. The iCard can reduce truancy and assure safety of pupils to their parents and guardians, although there does not seem to be a mechanism to prevent the tapping of an iCard by another individual to falsely indicate attendance. It has the ability to improve school security at all levels with a fully developed system and expanded usage. A hidden benefit is that it can raise awareness of the potential use of e-services and help spread ICT knowledge among schoolchildren.
