BHASHA GURU

Product Description

This project supports the implementation of nation-wide programmes to achieve trilingual status by 2022, and aims to create better understanding between the major communities in Sri Lanka. Bhasha Guru provides language learning lessons on web based and android mobile platforms teaching spoken languages, with the emphasis on words and more practical aspects of conversation rather than on writing and reading.

A learner is taken from basics (alphabets, numerals, words etc.) to an intermediary level, increasing vocabulary and teaching sentence formation. These two modules are followed by two more modules and take users to advance and diploma levels.

The complete mobile application introduces doing by learning strategy for the users, where gamification is implied. The knowledge acquired via the app is tested via interactive sessions, so the users can absorb the knowledge in a more cognitive manner.

Jurors’ Evaluation

The Bhasha Guru project, which provides Sinhala and Tamil language training via smart phones and web, makes a significant contribution towards the reconciliation process by facilitating communities to learn each other’s languages. Users will be able to progressively learn the languages starting at a basic level and advancing to a Diploma level through work activities and interactive sessions.

This project will be able to address human and technical resource constraints to a considerable degree by providing an easily accessible, user-friendly, self-learning, language training application to interested users.

Open Science Circle in Electronic Media (OSCEM)

Product Description

The project Open Science Circle in Electronic Media (OSCEM)/ “Vidu Nena Hawula” is an open forum that aims to improve the science literacy of the general public of Sri Lanka.

Services use modern mobile technology and most common social media and include daily SMS and email services in addition to a Facebook page, a Twitter profile, a science blog and an interactive question and answer service.

Jurors’ Evaluation

The OSCEM is uniquely designed to capture the interest of students, teachers, researchers and the general public in science concepts and applications related to everyday life. It is also considered to be the first Science SMS service in South Asia.

Scientific knowledge thus disseminated enhances productivity of our everyday lives.

One of the strengths of OSCEM is that it has enabled a link between the general public and the Sri Lankan scientific community to discuss science related queries and topics. Employment of a science text message service and science e-mail service to disseminate daily scientific information to users is an effective means to reach out to and engage audiences. These services are augmented by a Facebook page, a blog, a Twitter profile and an interactive Q&A service for users enabling them to network and contribute to discussions. Users are also offered weekly quizzes, which make them eligible for an annual Gold Medal Award. The service is offered free, and there are approximately 2000 registered users. This is estimated to be growing community and is an indication of the popularity of the service.

Khan Academy Localization Project – Mathematics TA7872

Project Description

Khan Academy localization project consists of three main segments in two academic cycles and piloting programmes to facilitate the teaching and learning of Mathematics subject in the General Education System of Sri Lanka.

Jurors’ Evaluation

The video based learning system of this project is useful as an attractive learning mode to improve the quality of mathematics education among Sri Lanka’s school children. It uses the highly popular Khan Mathematics video tutorials after mapping them with local mathematics syllabuses as well as newly developed videos.

Many of the resource constraints in learning and teaching mathematics can be effectively overcome through this project as students and teachers will be able to freely access these videos via YouTube; as standalone systems in their classrooms; via the national e-learning portal of the government and the Nenasa educational television. The project also has a sustainability component, as staff of the National institute of Education will be trained to build the in-house capacity for future developments.

The project is presently run on a pilot basis in 20 schools selected by the Ministry of Education. It forms part of government’s efforts to popularize mathematics learning among school children and thereby counter the poor performance level in school mathematics education. Current survey results indicate high acceptance of the videos by teachers and students, as well as a high degree of enthusiasm to use them as an aid in their day-to-day teaching and learning process. This is a promising aspect of the project.
